Path of Exile Item Upgrading

In Path of Exile, item upgrading is one of the best ways to improve your gear without relying upon big-ticket drops or trade. This article will help you understand how to upgrade your items.

Upgrades in equipment can add an additional bonus to the item upgrader's base stats. The bonus increases with upgrade component's level and rarity.

Components

Upgrade components are the parts that can make your weapons and armor better. You can find them through destroying enemies, buying them from karma vendors or finding them in the form of item-spheres. They can also be salvaged from equipment that has them, or through the highest-quality salvage kits like the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. Upgrade components cannot be destroyed when they are removed from an item.

The main function of upgrade components is to allow an item to be upgraded however, they also serve other purposes. They can be used to increase the quality of an upgradeable item, or they can be used to boost the experience gained by upgrading an existing weapon or piece of equipment. They can be made for additional bonuses. For instance, a specially created glyph can increase the chance of upgrading its target, while an upgrade boost will enhance the defense or attack property of a weapon, or armor.

You can bind an upgrade template to an item by selecting it from the edition GUI. This will display the upgrade components that the item can be upgraded. Alternately, you can make use of the workbench to choose an upgrade template. In either scenario, the item upgrader mod will be upgraded once enough upgrade components have been collected.

Each component has a unique experience multiplier. This determines how much experience an item gains when upgraded using that component. For instance, organic components have a a higher experience multiplier than mechanical ones. It is therefore recommended to upgrade with organic components until you reach the experience multiplier for the next level of the weapon or gear, then change to mechanical upgrades.

Each item has a maximum upgrade number that can be received. The number of upgrades is determined by the rank that can be upgraded and the type of upgrade available to the upgradeable item. The most powerful upgrade is a weapon with 10th level. However, the most commonly used upgrades for weapons are an tier 6 weapon as well as an armor upgrade of tier 5.

Sets

A set is a collection of items which all have the same bonus. Each item in the set can be upgraded at least one time, and each upgrade boosts the amount of bonuses that are guaranteed. The first time you upgrade the set piece or weapon, it will receive an increase of +1 to its primary stat. Reroll tokens are available in the shop for a small amount of in-game currency. They cannot be refunded. The new item will have the same bonuses as the previous one, but the stats will differ.

Players can change the identification of equipment in addition to rerolling it by interacting with an NPC upgrader. This will change its identification from a weapon to an armor, or reverse the process. The base requirements and stats remain the same. The cost of the Valorstone and Crest is calculated using the item's current Ilvl and the upgrade templates. The ilvl will also be reduced by the upgrade templates lvl reduction percentage. For example, an Upgrade Item of 8% will decrease the weapon's ilvl by 8 to 8%.

In addition to the increase in ilvl base the item will also receive upgrades in other stats like critical strike damage, damage from PvE and dodge, block and parry rating. These increases are built on the upgrade template.

The amount of damage and defense that the item is able to receive as it gets leveled up can be shown below the upgrade cost and decrease percentages in the upgrade template window. All armor and weapons that are not practice equipment gain these stats upon leveling up. The market will determine the worth of these stats. A weapon or armor with perfect rolls can fetch a much higher price than an unupp'd version. The same applies to other pieces of armor, such as circlets and tiaras.
