Removing the Old Handle

Door double glazing windows handles are not only important for their aesthetic value to your home, but they're essential for security as they allow you to lock and unlock your door. But, over time your door handle can lose its grip, appear loose or start to look old and worn. This is a clear indication that it's time to replace the door handle.

One of the first indications that your door handle is in need of replacing is the fact that it is becoming difficult to operate. This is a serious problem as you will no longer be in a position to lock or unlock the door, which could put you and your family at risk.

Another reason to replace the door handle is if it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be dangerous, particularly for elderly or children members who struggle to open it. They could be trapped. Luckily, it's quite simple to fix a damaged door handle by replacing the handle that was broken.

Most modern door handles are standard size tilt and turn window handles therefore will fit on any door. If you're not sure whether your new door handle will fit, try taking out the old one and measuring its housing holes. This will let you purchase the right size door handle.

It is easiest to take off the old door handle by removing it from the door. Usually you'll need a screwdriver. Some door handles come with an enclosure plate that hides the mounting screws. You will need to remove it to get to the screws. After you have removed the old handle, take note of how the spindle is connected. This will help you align the new handle.

Alternatively, you can remove the door handle by uncrewing it from the latch mechanism. This is usually done using the screwdriver, but you'll need to locate the small latch, which should be on the edge of the trim piece. After taking off the latch, remove the handle and strike plate. Then remove the latch from the edge of the door.

The Strike Plate

You'll have to replace your latch plate when you replace the handle. It's the part that holds the hole through which the latch of the door hooks when the door closes. The new handles will come with two latch plates: a rectangular and circular plate (see the above diagram which illustrates the components of the door handle). If your current latch plate is a rectangular shape, switch it to a circular one so that the latch hooks into the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle easier to operate.

The first step is to unhook the screw holding the latch plate. These screws are often tight, and may require some force to loosen. If you can, it might be beneficial to have a second person assist you with this task.

Once the screws are removed and the latch plate should pull out of the door with ease. If the latch plate is stuck or doesn't move, use a small hammer to scrape the edges. This can help loosen the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Screw the latch plate into the door jamb using the screws that were included with your new handles. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this could damage the strike plate.

If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, shut and open the door to determine whether it locks and closes correctly. If it doesn't you'll need to adjust the strike plate upwards or down, or even forward or back, until the door closes and latches correctly.

If the door is moving or jiggling, then it may be necessary to expand the hole for latching in the strike plate. This is more prevalent in older doors, however it can happen due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are too narrow or are not sized correctly for the latch, or because of damaged or broken strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the case, use a metal filing instead of a chisel, or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Removal of the Latch

The latch is an angled metal piece that slides into and out of a hole in the inside of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also catches a hole on the door frame so that the door remains closed. If your door wiggles when you close it, replacing the latch might be the only thing needed to correct the issue.

The screws that support the door latch are hard to spot, but you can usually insert a screwdriver into a small hole in the trim plate, and then pull the latch off. After removing the trim plate, you should be able to take off the latch and the bolts that hold it, as well as the spindle that holds it.

If the latch cannot be easily removed, use a paperclip or tool to remove it from the handle mechanism. Place the item in the slot for the latch that is recessed. gently move it around until you feel the latch and handle begin to split. You may need to repeat this process several times before you are able to take the latch off.

You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without problems after you have removed the old one. Use your new screws to secure the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is correctly positioned in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.

Before you install the new handle, make sure to measure your existing backset (the distance from the centre of the large hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Verify that the size of the latch of the new handle is equal to the measurement.

If you are replacing the latch or handle, or if your old lock cylinder has been damaged, then you'll require a new one. If you're not changing locks, a new lock should fit into the recess you have already installed, and also work with the keys you have already. Choose a latch that has rectangular cover plates that match your existing handles.

Put them away.

Most doors have an opening between the jamb of the door and the inside edge of the frame that allows for a handle, but not all have. If yours does not, you'll need to make a hole in the door to accommodate the new handle. It's the same procedure as opening a locked door, but you will need to be extra careful not to harm the door's frame or frame.

The installation of new door knob screws is required after the holes have been made. Make sure you purchase the same size as the previous ones, so you don't end up with the handle that is too tight or loose.
