In Path of Exile, item upgrading is one of the best ways to improve your gear without relying on massive drops or trade. This article will help you understand how to upgrade your items.

Upgrades to equipment provide an increase to the item upgrades's base stats. This bonus scales based on the rarity and quality of the upgrade component.

Components

Upgrade components are the parts that improve your armor and weapons more effective. You can find them by destroying enemies, purchasing them from karma vendors or finding them in the form of item-spheres. They can also be salvaged from equipment that contains them, or through the highest-quality salvage kits like the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. Contrary to other products, upgrade components are not destroyed when removed from an item.

Upgrade components are typically used to improve an item however, they can also be used for other purposes. They can be stacked to increase the level of an upgradeable item or they can be used to boost the experience gained by upgrading an existing weapon or piece of equipment. They can be forged for additional bonuses. A glyph that is crafted can boost the chance of upgrading its target while boost upgrades increase the attack or defense attributes of weapons.

You can bind an upgrade template to an item by selecting it from the edition GUI. This will show the list of upgrade components that the item can be upgraded to. Alternatively, you can utilize the workbench to select an upgrade template. In either case, an item upgrader kit will be upgraded when enough upgrade components have been collected.

Each component has a different experience multiplier, which determines the amount of experience an item gets when it upgrades with that component. For instance, organic components have a a higher experience multiplier than mechanical ones. It is therefore recommended to upgrade using organic components until you reach the multiplier of experience for the next rank of the weapon or gear, then move to mechanical upgrades.

Each item comes with a maximum upgrade number that it is possible to receive. The number of upgrades are determined by the upgradeable rank and the type of upgrade available to the upgradeable item. The highest level of upgrade is a weapon with tier 10. However, the most popular weapon upgrades are the tier 6 weapon and a tier 5 armor upgrade.

Sets

A set is a collection of objects that all share the same bonus. Each item in the set can be upgraded at least once, and the upgrade will increase the guaranteed bonuses. When you first upgrade a set piece or weapon will give it a +1 increase to its primary stat. If you are upgrading an item with an added bonus the item can be rerolled a single time, and its guarantee will reset to 0. Reroll tokens can be purchased in the shop for a small amount of in-game currency. They cannot be refunded. The new item will have the same bonuses like the first, however the statistics will also be different.

Players can alter the identification of equipment in addition to changing it's roll by interfacing with an upgrader NPC. This will change its identification as a weapon to armor, or reverse it. In addition to the base ilvl boost it will also be upgraded in other stats such as critical strike damage, damage from PvE and dodge, block, and parry rating. These enhancements are also based on the upgrade template.

In the upgrade template, you can see the amount of damage or defense the item will receive after it is leveled up. This is displayed below the cost as well as the upgrade percentages. Apart from the equipment for practice, all items and armor get the same stats when they are upgraded. The value of these additional stats will be dictated by the market, with a perfectly perfectly rolled piece of armor or weapon is able to command more in trade value than unupp'd versions.
