Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our bare floor tests and are particularly effective at cleaning pet hair. However, they have several flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. One of the Q5's shortcomings is its navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's thus susceptible to get stuck on shoes and socks and couldn't navigate through rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It also doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of a room.

It's still a great deal, especially if your office or home has lots of unfinished floors and you want to save money. It's also very quiet and can be used when you're at work or in school. The only thing it's missing that you don't get in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. It's also less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on very well and can't take on dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle, however. And, if you have to, you can switch the mopping pad for dry ones in a matter of just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into an elegant, compact package. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it quick to clean and efficient at tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also has strong suction and a self-emptying bin. It's the best robot hoover for carpets but it isn't as effective as some of its competitors when it comes to deep cleaning.

This top-performing mop and vacuum combination makes use of advanced sensors to dodge obstacles and pet waste, and it also learns your home's layout over time to provide more efficient cleaning. The app allows you to customize zones and change the cleaning schedule. It has a battery life that is comparable to other models.

When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can tell it to pull back and extend its mop. This helps prevent cross-contamination. The flex arm is perfect to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. However, it doesn't have the same level of washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ as well as the iRobot Combo j9+.

During testing, the X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop that could complete the entire house with the battery at 66 percent left. It can clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature that we haven't seen before on other robotic vacuum/mop combinations.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

The robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba unit than the boxy units of the competition. It is one of our most attractive robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also its smartest. It features advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop that scored the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our tests. This is due to the combination of high-tech sensors, including a structured light system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is easy to use. It comes with an intuitive mobile application interface, and it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This can be a problem in mornings before work or during the night when you're trying to fall asleep.

It's also a bit costly but not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally powerful and more attractive. If you're willing to put up with a bit more noise and some additional cost this is a capable two-in-one that should satisfy most people.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot autonomous vacuum and mop with a lot of advanced features that let you get rid of your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaner that is similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically emptys the vacuum's bin and fills up the water tank, and washes and drys the mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of an array of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and spot obstacles, making it more efficient than its more expensive rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time, though this wasn't completely foolproof in our tests, and was sometimes confused with obstructions or power cords.

Its vacuum has a high suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to finish the job. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates how hard the vac works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home according to the amount of dirt they tend to be.

If you have a larger home, it is worth selecting a robot that comes with spot or zone cleaning mode. This lets you tell the robot which area of your home must be cleaned using the app or voice command. If you have furniture, a stairway mode is also a good option. iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more advanced than the price suggests. It vacuums well, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It's self-sufficient too, with a fully-featured app as well as a self-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot application is designed to help you navigate a mapping run which collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. You can use it to create cleaning schedules, plan an area for cleaning or to sort out your rooms with the most dirt to improve performance. The app also gives access to a host of features like seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

The twin cameras are shaped like cute little eyes. It does a good job vacuuming, but it is more susceptible to be caught by low thresholds and is a bit louder than the other top robotic vacuums we've tried. It also has a less intuitive app and a tiny base station that doesn't double as a bin for emptying.
